Laboratory for Testing Mechanical Properties (LIMS) is an integral part of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture (FMENA), University of Zagreb, Department of Materials, Chair of Materials and Tribology. Laboratory activity is focused on a scientific research, teaching and collaboration with industry. In a scientific research laboratory employees are involved in a number of scientific and development projects. Teaching is expressed through experimental exercises in several courses and through conducting experimental tests for the graduate and doctoral thesis. Collaboration with industry is carried out within the following areas: calibration of devices for testing mechanical properties of materials, testing of mechanical properties of materials and expertise on failures and machine parts.

1960. - LIMS established.

1988. - LIMS became accredited Laboratory for Calibration of material and hardness testing machines under the authorisation of Federal Bureau of Measures and Precious Metals, Belgrade.

From 1990. LIMS acts as one of calibration laboratories at the FMENA authorized by the State office for Metrology, Republic of Croatia.

In February 2004. laboratory receives internationally recognized accreditation by the DKD (Deutsche Kalibrierdienst), today DAkkS (Deutsche Akkreditierungsstelle), in accordance with ISO / IEC 17025 for the calibration of force measuring equipment in the range from 50 to 200 kN under the accreditation mark DKD-K-35602.

2004. - The agreement on the National force standard between FMENA and DZNM is signed whereby LIMS becomes National Calibration Laboratory and undertake preservation, maintenance and use of the national force standard.

2005. - Renovation of the laboratory and installation of the reference force standard with nominal force of 500 kN.

2006. - Technology research-development project "Reference standard machine for Vickers hardness measurement" and installation of the reference hardness machine.

2007.- Scientific project "Improving the measurement capabilities of the National force standard” is initiated.

2009 - LIMS extends the scope of accreditation on the calibration of force proving instruments (ISO 376) in the measuring range from 10 to 500 kN with measuring capability 0.05%.

Since 2010. LIMS operates as part of the National metrology structure and is the associated laboratory of the Croatian Metrology Institute (HMI).

In February 2013 a new contract on the National force standard between the HMI and the FMENA is signed according to which LIMS undertakes obligation of the development, preservation, maintenance and use of the national force standard.

2014. - LIMS is accredited by the Croatian Accreditation Agency (HAA) and extends the scope of accreditation on the calibration of hardness measuring equipment according to methods HB, HV and HRC (ISO 6506-2, 6507-2, 6508 -2).
